4 Things That Compromise PC Performance
Did you ever notice when you first purchase your PC is runs at lightning speed and optimum performance? Then after an extended period of computer use you start asking, “How can I speed up my PC?” This is because there are several factors that can compromise PC performance over a period of time and as a result of normal computer use. In order to increase PC performance you must address the issues that are affecting PC performance. Some of these issues include:
Fragmented Hard Drive
After using your PC for an extended period of time the files on your hard drive become fragmented and broken. This can also occur as the result of installing and uninstalling software programs. If you are asking yourself, “How can I speed up my PC?” one of the ways you can enhance PC performance is to defragment the hard drive. Windows provides a defragmentation tool for performing this task.
You can access the defragmentation tool by clicking on Start and then navigating to Accessories. Click on System Tools and choose the Disk Defragmenter. It will take some time to run the program since it has to review all of your files however; it will clean up fragmented, corrupt, and broken files and place your PC back in good working order.
Virus or Malware Infection
If your PC displays sluggish performance it may have a virus or malware infection. Viruses and malware can run undetected in the background of your PC and use up resources which results in slow performance.
A virus or malware can enter your PC if your antivirus and antispyware programs are not up to date with the latest definitions or you have not performed a scan in a long time. Set your antivirus and anti-malware programs to automatically look for definition updates and scan your PC. If you have already done this it is still possible for tech savvy programmers to bypass your virus protection programs. In this case make sure you are performing a deep scan instead of a quick scan of your PC.
Junk Files
When you use your PC for any extended period of time it accumulates junk files which are unnecessary and take up space on your hard disk. Windows provides a tool for eliminating junk files to free up disk space and speed up your PC. You can access this tool by clicking on Start and navigating to Accessories. Click on Disk Cleanup to run the tool. This will remove temporary files that you do not need, empty the Recycle Bin, and uninstall programs that you do not use.
Start-Up Programs
If you PC is taking a long time to boot up and is running slowly during computing tasks you may have unnecessary start-up programs running. To check what programs are running simply click on Start and then type msconfig into the search command. This will allow access to the System Configuration utility where you can disable unnecessary start-up programs.
If you are asking, “How can I speed up my PC?” performing these tasks on a regular basis along with scanning your PC with antivirus and anti-malware programs will keep your PC running in tip top shape.
